In July 2010, fifteen financial brothers in the Southern Maryland Alpha Planning Committee endorsed the application to petition the General Organization of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to grant a charter establishing an Alumni Chapter seated in Waldorf, MD to join the brotherhood and serve the communities of Charles County specifically, and Southern Maryland generally.

On July 24th, 2010 the Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter, Key 677 of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered at the 104th Anniversary Convention, 90th General Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alpha Foundation of Southern Maryland, Inc.

     The Alpha Foundation has served Southern Maryland since 2011. Our Foundation provides annual scholarships to students who may be under-resourced to meet the expenses of college tuition, textbooks, and other materials increasing the challenges of college life. As a nonprofit organization, the Alpha Foundation of Southern Maryland does not profit from any funds raised to help college students. Funds raised through the Foundation are used to support our main goal, to help students go to college. Our vision is clear: we raise money for academic scholarships and provide financial support to those who have a need. The Alpha Foundation of Southern Maryland is identified by the Internal Revenue Service Code as a 501(c)(3) organization, which means donors who make charitable contributions to our Foundation may be entitled to tax deductions to the extent allowed by current federal law.

scholarship eligibility

     The Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is pleased to offer scholarships to students pursuing higher education. Scholarship applicants must be graduating high school males who are residents of Charles, St. Mary’s, or Calvert counties, and have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Applicants for the scholarship program must expect to enroll in a four year college or university, a junior or community college, or a trade/vocational school during the fall of 2024. Mentees active in the Go-to-High School, Go-to-College program of Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are especially encouraged to apply.

the application process

  • Applicants must provide the following no later than May 10, 2024:
    • A completed application form (below).
    • An essay (one-page max.) responding to the following prompt: “In what ways have your activities outside the classroom helped to shape or refine your skills, ideas, or values as a young man? As you compose your answer, be sure to describe the ways you have participated in community service, extracurricular (e.g. sports and school clubs), community organizing, civic organizations (e.g. Boy Scouts), church groups, employment, or sibling care activities.”
    • A copy of your official high school transcript.
  • Finalists are required to participate in a face to-face or videoconference interview with the Scholarship Committee. The time and date will be shared separately.
  • Upload documents with application.

scholarship selection

     Successful applicants will be notified on or about June 1, 2024. Upon notification, students should be prepared to provide a letter of acceptance from their institution of choice. Prior to disbursement, scholarship recipients must demonstrate proof of matriculation (e.g. a copy of Fall 2024 registered course schedule and a copy of the student’s college ID card). Scholarship funds will then be disbursed directly to the student. Grantees will also be expected to facilitate seminars for future Go-to-High School, Go-to-College mentees on college readiness and success. If not selected, no correspondence will be shared.
